Fallen off the wagon again??

Unbelievable!!! How does this happen? Why does this happen?? Why is it so hard to stay ON the wagon??? I know, I know, life gets in the way. Plus - it's more fun to be off the healthy lifestyle wagon, right??

Well - I am going to attempt another time to get back on track. Water, logging, and vitamins are on tap as my first step. These are things that do not require any more time from me - time is a luxury I just don't seem to have right now. I am just trying to shower a few times a week.

Anyone with me?? What are you going to do to get back on track or to increase your healthy lifestyle??

Can you get your old body back??

Ok ... So I'm feeling a bit deflated. A few people have said to me lately - your body will never be the same after kids so don't disappoint yourself by trying.

Yes, I've had 3 kids in 3 years and yes, I am not shrinking like I would like, but...

Isn't that awful and mean???

I am willing to put in time and work - but is this true. I hope to prove it wrong.

What do you think?? Anyone with me on this??

Changes Made!

So I am taking my own advice - making some changes!

A few easy things to get started and to feel like progress is being made is the best way to kick off a plan. What can you do in 48 hours to get started? Here are 5 suggestions to get started.

1. I cleaned out my refrigerator of all "bad" food!! Yes, it is pretty empty but a starting point.
2. Made an appointment with my personal trainer. This is going to be scary, but it's the only way I am accountable to keep on working out. He's coming on Friday for our first official workout...
3. Started to exercise. I just did it - don't think about it - just go!
4. Logging food - I know everyone hates this. It's time consuming and a pain in the butt to do, but IT WORKS!!! If there is one thing out there that I can recommend its to log. It doesn't matter how you do it, just get it down - on paper or electronically. I am using MyFitnessPal and there are many others out there - pick one that works best for you!
5. Increased water intake. Get a BPA free bottle and drink water!!

Even though it sounds like a lot, once you get started and keep it up for a few days, it will not only get easier, but it will become part of your routine.

How do you start living healthy?

How do you get back into exercise and eating healthy when you have been away from it for a while? Tough question!!

For many moms, we focus on our kids and put ourselves on the back burner. Even though this is normal, it is the worst thing to do. We need to be role models for our children.

So - how do we start? Isn't that the hardest part? I sure think so!

Make the decision to change. Change something - anything! Change something once a week or one small thing a day - you choose - just decide to change a little bit at a time.

Make the decision and get yourself psyched to change!!

Backtrack: Surviving Children's Birthday Parties

Back from hiatus! It's been a while - Nicolas Thomas arrived on August 13!! We are all doing well - keeping busy - getting some sleep - and trying, to no avail yet, to get into a schedule.

I am going to backtrack just a bit to the days before he arrived...

Mariela's Third Birthday
Mariela turned 3 on August 9th. We had a small celebration with my parents and grandmother the day before. While encouraging Mariela's three year old independence, I asked her what she would like to have for dinner on her birthday. She replies, "HOT DOGS!!!"

Quelle horror!!! Right?

Not really!! I am glad she likes all kinds of foods - even if it is the worst one for you.

As hot dogs are a staple at most parties and summer holiday weekends - including those for adults - what is one to do to in order to maintain a good way of eating?? Eat well as much as you can. Go ahead and have one (1) hot dog and then try to fill in the gaps with better sides. Or if you can, bring a side dish that you know is healthy and won't ruin your good work.

So, that's what I tried to do. I made side dishes that wouldn't break the food budget: pasta salad (recipe below), corn on the cob, watermelon for dessert, and of course a birthday cake. By offsetting the bad food with some healthy alternatives, the meal does not seem like a waste. You are able to enjoy the cookout with everyone else.

Now the hard part is staying away from the second hot dog or the chips, dips, and other sides. Your best bet if you are unable to have healthy side or alternatives is to eat at home before you go. It's not as much fun, I know, but it's a great way to fiend off the hunger when the Doritos are calling your name.

Good luck at the kids' parties!!

Pasta Salad
1 lb of cooked Barilla Plus Rotini pasta
Favorite chopped vegetables - I choose carrots, red peppers, cucumbers, black olives
Feta cheese: 1/2 regular and 1/2 reduced fat
Dressing: Greek, Italian, or oil/vinegar; no creamed dressings

Mix all ingredients together and keep cold until serving. Enjoy!!

Dinner with Prego Lex

One more week down... still here... no baby yet...

What a great dinner we had Saturday night. Not only were there great friends, but fantastic food cooked to perfection!!

Gil and I went to a great friends' home for dinner, desserts, and drinks on Saturday. We always have a great time with them, but this time was over the top! Since it's probably my last dinner pregnant with them, the hostess splurged and wow did she impress! Flank steak cooked to perfection for all tastes, scalloped potatoes (I'll get to them in a minute), string beans, and stuffed tomatoes. We brought a salad (recipe below) and some vino for the group!

We got into a discussion about eating with me - pregnant and not. Yes, I do change my eating habits when pregnant - I splurge more, eat more and enjoy food more, but I still try to eat as healthy as possible. Some may say, shouldn't you eat better when you are pregnant since you are eating for a baby as well? Well, maybe I should rephrase and say I enjoy heartier food more and in slightly larger quantities.

But back to the meal... The scalloped potatoes were amazing! I don't know what is in them and I certainly don't want to know. They tasted too good to ruin them in my head with the actual ingredients. But this is the point I want to make. If you don't eat scalloped potatoes or food such as this often - splurge! Go for it!! You have to enjoy yourself and indulge every once in a while. I love food, but I also try to make sure I don't go crazy too often with less than perfect-for-your-health options.

Bottom line - the non-pregnant Lex will request the scalloped potatoes again! But, I will make room for them in my food log. They are too good to never have again!!

Salad Recipe
Head of organic red leaf lettuce
Head of organic romaine lettuce
Strawberries - quartered - about 2-3 per person
Goat cheese - 1 TBSP per person
Ken's Healthy Options Raspberry Walnut Dressing - 1 TBSP per person
Candied walnuts - 1 TBSP per person
Mix all ingredients together - ENJOY!!

First Timer

Here we are - 36 weeks pregnant and writing the first blog. This is going to be a crazy journey my friends - that I am sure of. Everything else - not so sure...

With 4 weeks left, I am anxious - for many things: meeting our new baby boy, changes in family dynamics, getting my body back to myself nevertheless to what it was before, enjoying a DRINK!!, and lastly getting back to running and exercise!

I am going to miss my almost nightly bowl of ice cream with crushed Heath bar pieces and of course the occasional Yours Truly Not-so Fries. But, to have my body back as my own - it's worth it!!

In addition to sharing my journey back to fitness and normalcy with two toddlers and a newborn, I will be offering tips or tricks or workout songs or anything to help motivate and focus. I welcome your thoughts and feedback on how I can help you achieve your fitness goals.

Strong Like Mom Tip: Find a BPA-free water bottle that works for you and use it! At least 8 cups (64 oz) of water a day!! Start slow and attach the water bottle to your hip.
